About Debit / ATM Cards

ATM and debit cards look interchangeable at a glance, but they differ in several ways. Annual fees vary by bank — some cards charge none at all — and some bundle free accident insurance with no extra premium. The card network, such as Visa, Mastercard or a domestic network, affects where it's accepted and the fees charged for spending or withdrawing cash abroad. On top of that, fees for withdrawing across regions or across banks within Thailand also vary by card.

CheckDi compiles ATM and debit cards from banks across Thailand using the Bank of Thailand's public product data, so you can compare fees, cover and networks from every card in one place, free of charge.

How to choose Debit / ATM Cards

  • Check the annual fee and its waiver conditions — some banks charge none at all, others waive it if you keep a minimum balance in the account.
  • See what insurance cover the card bundles in, such as accident cover, since some cards include it free with no extra premium.
  • Match the card network to how you use it — if you travel abroad often, an international network like Visa or Mastercard is usually accepted more widely.
  • Compare cross-region and cross-bank ATM withdrawal fees if you often need to withdraw outside your home area or bank.
  • If you'll use the card to spend or withdraw abroad, also check the currency-conversion fee.
  • Match the card tier to how you'll actually use it — higher tiers usually carry higher fees and limits, while a standard card may be enough for basic use.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an ATM card and a debit card?
An ATM card can only withdraw cash and perform transactions at an ATM. A debit card can also withdraw cash, but adds the ability to pay for purchases or shop online like a credit card, deducting the amount from your deposit account immediately at the time of the transaction — unlike a credit card, which is borrowing against future repayment.
Does a debit card have a spending limit?
Yes. Banks set a daily spending limit and a daily cash withdrawal limit, which vary by card tier and each bank's terms. Cardholders can usually ask to raise or lower the limit within what the bank allows, and every transaction is always deducted from the actual balance in the linked account.
What does the bundled insurance on a debit card cover?
It depends on the card. Some include travel accident cover or purchase protection for items bought with the card, usually with conditions on how the card must be used to trigger the cover — for example, the ticket must be bought using that specific card. Read each card's cover conditions in full before relying on it.
How much does it cost to withdraw across banks or regions?
The fee depends on each bank's terms and the card type. Generally, withdrawing from the same bank within the same region carries no fee, while withdrawing across regions or across banks usually adds a fee. Check the current rate directly with the bank that issued your card.
What should I do if my card is lost or stolen?
Contact your bank to block the card immediately once you realise it's lost or stolen, to prevent unauthorised transactions. After it's blocked, you can request a replacement card through the bank's process, which may carry a replacement card fee as set by the bank.
