About Deposits

A deposit account is where most saving starts, yet the rate one bank pays can be several times another's, and the conditions differ just as much. Some accounts pay a headline rate only if you deposit every month; others let you withdraw freely but pay less. Comparing before you open one makes the same money work harder without taking on more risk.

CheckDi compiles deposit accounts from banks and finance providers across Thailand using the Bank of Thailand's public product data, so you can compare rates, minimum opening balances and conditions in one place, free of charge.

How to choose Deposits

  • Look at the rate you will actually earn — a headline "up to" rate often applies only to part of the balance, or only during a promotional window.
  • Check the minimum to open and the minimum balance against what you can realistically keep in the account.
  • Read the withdrawal terms — fixed deposits usually forfeit interest if you withdraw early.
  • Factor in tax — savings interest above the Revenue Department's threshold is subject to withholding tax, while tax-free accounts require an equal deposit every month.
  • Check deposit protection — deposits at institutions covered by the deposit protection law are protected up to the statutory limit, per depositor per institution.
  • If you will move money often, weigh withdrawal and transfer fees alongside the rate — fees can cancel out the interest.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a savings and a fixed deposit account?
A savings account lets you withdraw at any time with no fixed term, but usually pays less. A fixed deposit locks the money for an agreed term — commonly 3, 6, 12 or 24 months — in exchange for a higher rate, and withdrawing early usually means losing the quoted interest.
Is deposit interest taxable in Thailand?
Savings interest above the Revenue Department's annual threshold is subject to withholding tax, and fixed-deposit interest is generally taxed from the first baht. Tax-free deposit accounts are exempt provided every condition is met. Confirm current rules with your bank or the Revenue Department.
What is a tax-free deposit account?
It is a fixed-term account requiring an equal deposit every month for a set period — commonly 24 or 36 months — where the interest is tax-exempt if every condition is met. The number of such accounts a person may hold is limited, and missing too many monthly deposits can forfeit the benefit.
Are my deposits protected if the bank fails?
Deposits held at institutions covered by the deposit protection law are protected up to the statutory limit, counted across all accounts one depositor holds at the same institution. If you hold more than the limit, spreading deposits across institutions is one way to reduce risk. Check the current limit with the Deposit Protection Agency.
Which account should I choose for the highest rate?
Long-term fixed deposits and some banks' digital accounts typically pay more than an ordinary savings account, but in exchange for withdrawal limits or monthly deposit conditions. A practical approach is to keep everyday money in a freely accessible account and put money you will not need soon into the higher-rate one.
