About Vehicle Title Loans

A vehicle title loan uses your car or motorcycle's registration book as collateral for a credit line — you keep using the vehicle as normal throughout the repayment period; it's not a sale or a handover of the vehicle itself. The credit limit each provider approves mainly depends on the vehicle's type, age and condition, while the interest rate and related fees can vary considerably between providers. Comparing before you decide helps you see the real monthly cost, not just the credit limit you're approved for.

CheckDi compiles vehicle title loans from providers across Thailand using the Bank of Thailand's public product data, so you can compare rates, credit limits and conditions from every provider in one place, free of charge.

How to choose Vehicle Title Loans

  • Compare the interest rate including fees on an annual basis, not just the bare interest rate, since some providers bundle in additional fees.
  • Check the credit limit each provider offers for your vehicle's type and model, since the limit depends on the vehicle's actual condition and value, not a fixed number.
  • Choose a repayment term that matches what you can actually afford — a shorter term means a higher instalment but less total interest.
  • Ask what happens if you fall behind — whether there's a debt restructuring option before it reaches collateral seizure.
  • Check borrower eligibility — vehicle age, ownership documents and income documents each provider requires — before spending time applying.
  • Don't borrow more than you need — for many people the vehicle is both the collateral and their livelihood, so falling behind carries more impact than with an ordinary loan.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to hand over the vehicle for a title loan?
No — you only hand over the vehicle's registration book as collateral. The vehicle itself stays with you and can be used as normal throughout the repayment period. That's the key difference from a sale-and-leaseback or an outright sale, where ownership or the vehicle itself changes hands immediately.
What determines the credit limit I'll be approved for?
Providers mainly assess the vehicle's type, brand, model, age and condition, and also factor in the borrower's income and repayment capacity. The actual approved limit therefore varies between vehicles even of the same model.
What happens if I fall behind on repayments?
If you default under the contract terms, the lender has the legal right to act on the collateral, which can lead to seizure of the registration book or the vehicle to recover the outstanding debt. Before it reaches that point, contact the provider as soon as repayment problems start, to ask about debt restructuring options.
Can I get a title loan on a vehicle I'm still paying off with a hire-purchase loan?
Title loans generally require the vehicle to be free of existing obligations — fully paid off, with the registration book in the borrower's own name — since the book itself is the collateral. If you're still paying off a hire-purchase loan, ask individual providers whether they offer any alternative.
Vehicle title loan or unsecured personal loan — which suits whom?
A title loan usually offers a higher limit and a lower rate than an unsecured loan, since the vehicle serves as collateral, which suits someone who owns their vehicle outright and needs a larger amount. An unsecured loan suits someone with no asset to pledge or who needs a smaller amount, in exchange for a higher rate.
